Description
Crispy and flavorful fried green beans coated with a crunchy beer batter make a perfect snack or appetizer. This recipe features a simple batter seasoned with garlic and onion powder, then deep-fried to golden perfection.
Ingredients
Scale
Batter and Seasoning
- 1¼ cups all-purpose flour (divided)
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 cup beer
- 1-2 tablespoons hot sauce
Vegetables and Oil
- 1 pound fresh green beans (ends trimmed)
- Vegetable oil (for frying, about 1 inch in depth)
Instructions
- Heat the oil. In a large Dutch oven, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil to 375°F, ensuring it reaches the proper frying temperature before adding the green beans. Line a baking sheet with paper towels to drain the fried green beans later.
- Prepare the green beans. In a large bowl, toss the trimmed green beans with ¼ cup of the flour to lightly coat them, then shake off any excess flour to help the batter adhere properly.
- Make the batter. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the remaining 1 cup of flour with salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper. Add the beer and hot sauce, whisking until the batter is smooth and well combined.
- Batter the green beans. Dredge about one-third of the floured green beans into the beer batter, fully coating them. Shake off any excess batter to prevent clumping in the oil.
- Fry the green beans. Carefully place the battered green beans into the hot oil. Fry for 3 to 4 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy, then transfer them to the prepared baking sheet lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Repeat frying. Continue the battering and frying process with the remaining green beans in batches to avoid overcrowding and ensure even cooking.
- Season and serve. Once all green beans are fried and drained, sprinkle them with a little extra kosher salt and serve hot for best texture and flavor.
Notes
- The beer batter provides a crispy and flavorful coating that complements the fresh green beans perfectly.
- Use a thermometer to maintain oil temperature at 375°F for optimal frying results and to prevent greasy green beans.
- Drain the green beans on paper towels to remove excess oil and keep them crispy.
- Adjust the hot sauce quantity according to your heat preference.
- If you prefer a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend and use gluten-free beer.
